“I believe it is critical to create a network throughout the company and to maintain those relationships.”

That’s some of the professional development advice that Lori Stackpole, Lens Planning Manager, ROA Planning, gave during her interview with the Women of Vision Employee Resource Group. Learn more about Lori by checking out the Q&A between her and Trinitii Brewer(Corporate Legal), the communications liaison for Women of Vision.

What has your career path looked like?

My career path has been a jungle gym very much how Sheryl Sandberg describes in her book Lean In. I have tried a variety of roles and responsibilities over my career that have led to both sideways and upwards motion. I’ve never regretted trying something new and I’ve had so much fun experiencing new things and meeting new people!

Have you had a formal mentor that has helped you in your career?

I participated a few years ago in the Women of Vision mentoring program and really enjoyed the insights I gained from many women in the group. I built several friendships through that experience that I continue to use as a resource.

Do you have any tips for women’s professional development?

I believe you should start with your network to get help in your career. Approach a woman that you trust and tell her what you think the next steps are in your career. She may know someone in a similar job that she can have you talk to in order to learn more about your desired job. She may be able to provide a fresh perspective that will give you new ideas. I believe it’s critical to create a network throughout the company and to maintain those relationships.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have three great passions- spending time with my family, reading and Crossfit workouts. I love it when I can find ways to combine two of those activities! I have found a great deal of joy experiencing some of my favorite books like The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and Harry Potter through my kids’ eyes. I love when my husband and I get to do a Crossfit workout together, There is something special about sharing the misery and accomplishment of this with your spouse!
